A spectacular 30-metre drive from Marc Wilmots helped Belgium to a 2-0 victory over a disappointing Colombia in a World Cup warm-up match here on Wednesday. The fresh setback for the talented South Americans came just four days after a comprehensive 3-1 defeat at the hands of Germany and will have done little to inspire fear in their France 98 rivals. A Danny Boffin header and Wilmots strike left the Belgians in control after only half an hour and Colombia, who face England, Romania and Tunisia in group G, never looked like getting back into it. Despite a more spirited second-half performance, the Colombians rarely threatened the Belgian goal and the defensive errors that contributed to Belgiums two goals will have given coach Hernan Daro Gomez serious cause for concern with just a week left to the kick-off in France. Belgiums opener underlined the Colombian goalkeeper Oscar Cordobas weakness in the air.

A well-worked move found Brazilian-born striker Luis Oliveira with space on the right touchline to whip in a cross to the near post. Cordoba started to come for it but then changed his mind, allowing Boffin to head home from close range after 15 minutes. It was a goal that will have England striker Alan Shearer rubbing his hands with glee in anticipation of facing the Colombians on June 26. Cordoba had little chance of stopping Wilmots strike 15 minutes later but it was slack marking that gave the Schalke 04 midfielder the time and the space to pick his spot in the top corner. The second-half entry of Victor Aristizabal and Adolfo Valencia sparked the Colombians into life.

Faustino Asprilla spurned a 53rd-minute half-chance created by a brilliant through ball from veteran playmaker Carlos Valderrama-the strawberry-blonde midfielders solitary flash of inspiration all night. Anthony De Avila had a good penalty claim turned down on the hour mark. Played in by Asprilla, De Avila went round Filip De Wilde and looked like he was pulled down by the Belgian goalkeeper.

Bulgarian referee Stefan Ormandjev decided it was a dive and pulled out his yellow card-a decision that pretty much summed up a miserable night for the Colombians in the Brussels rain.
